One word to describe Sicily: enchanting!
Two weeks in Sicily was perhaps a tiny tiny portion of what I would love to spend and explore. As the largest island of the Mediterranean sea, Sicily’s over 2500 years of strategic importance shows its successive dominion by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, a testament to nearly every Mediterranean civilization in the past.
We rented a 3 bedroom villa near Noto, on the southeast part of Sicily where we spent most of our time and it includes out visit to two other nearby Baroque towns Modica and Ragusa. Siracusa which was the most important and powerful Greek city and makes it a must destination in the region as well. Ortigia being the ancient nucleus of Siracusa best preserves the city’s spirit and it is an amazing place just to wonder around.
Taormina being perhaps Sicily’s most expensive place to stay is an amalgam of the bling bling glitzy resort and the spectacular remains of the classical theater while framed by the distant Mt. Etna. Certainly a unique place to visit.
